<p>The South Superior Union Hall was built in 1921 in the southern part of what is now Superior, Wyoming. The hall was built by six locals of the United Mine Workers to accommodate union and community activities in the coal-mining community of Superior. Built in 1921, the two-story brick halls plan is a parallelogram, though to be unique for its time in Wyoming. The hall housed doctors and dentists&#39; offices, a bowling alley and a grocery store. Dances were held in the upstairs meeting space. With the closing of the Superior mines in the 1960s the union hall was sold in 1964. The hall was converted to a cafe, but the business did not prosper and the hall was abandoned.</p><br>
<p>The South Superior Union Hall has been restored and is the center of an interpretive park.</p><br>
<p>The South Superior Union Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.</p><br>
<p>Mont Granier  is a limestone mountain located between the départements of Savoie and Isère in France. It lies in the Chartreuse Mountains range of the French Prealps between the towns of Chapareillan and Entremont-le-Vieux. Its east face overlooks the valley of Grésivaudan and Combe de Savoie, and the north face overlooks Chambéry. At 900 meters tall, Mont Granier has one of the highest cliffs in France.</p><br>
<h2>Landslides</h2><br>
<h3>Catastrophic 1248 Landslide</h3><br>
<p>In the year 1248, between November 24–25, a mass of limestone resting on marls slid into the valley, causing a massive landslide that destroyed many villages and caused over a thousand casualties, although the numbers are still debated. This event created the sheer 700 m north face of the mountain.</p><br>

<p>The 1248 Landslide was one of the biggest and deadliest landslides in Europe.</p><br>
<h3>January 9, 2016 Landslide</h3><br>
<p>In the night of between January 8-9, 2016, a part of the northwest pillar crumbled towards Entremont-le-Vieux, where residents woke up at 5 in the morning. The collapse was of about 170,000 cubic meters of rock. The last debris were stopped by trees within 300 m of the closest houses, lying in the hamlets of Brancaz and Tencovaz.</p><br>
<h2>Activities</h2><br>
<p>It is a popular spot for hiking, caving, rock climbing, and BASE jumping. The mountain contains the cave system le Systeme du Granier, which is over 55 km long, and 564 m deep.</p><br>
<p>On November 13, 1988, cavers Pierre Guichebaron and Marc Papet discovered an extension to the Balme à Collomb cave on the west side of the mountain at an altitude of 5,577 feet (1,700 meters) that contained the skeletons of over 1,000 cave bears that date between 24,000 and 45,000 years.</p><br>
<p>Around the base of Mont Granier are many vineyards that produce the Apremont and Abymes appellations. These wines are made from the white Jacquère grape, seldom used outside Savoie.</p><br>
<p>The Col du Granier (1,134 m.) crosses the ridge to the north-west of the mountain.</p><br>
<p>The Reisalpe  is the highest mountain in the Gutenstein Alps and lies between Lilienfeld, Hohenberg and Kleinzell in Lower Austria. It is a popular destination, both for hikers in summer and also for ski mountaineering and snowshoe walks in winter, and is classed as relatively safe from avalanches.</p><br>
<p>Near the summit stands a Madonna, recently joined by a summit cross, as well as the Reisalpe refuge hut (Schutzhaus) opened on 9 October 1898. A small Austrian Armed Forces hut is also located in the vicinity of the summit.</p><br>
<h2>Schutzhaus</h2><br>
<p>In October 1898, the Reisalpe Schutzhaus was opened. It was a beautiful autumn day, and over seven hundred people attended the elaborate opening ceremony. The black and gold flags fluttered in the wind, symbolizing the pride of the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy. Prior to the building&#39;s completion, the Austria-Hungarian Alpine club erected the four-meter Christian Gipfelkreuz (summit cross). The carving in the crossbeam reads "Gods Beautiful Homeland". Two hundred local villagers attended the festivities while five hundred guests were hiking tourists who came from far away.</p><br>
<p>Everyone who attended the celebration was dressed in their traditional Austrian and Bavarian Tracht clothing, emphasizing their unity for this event. The women wore their dirndls, while the men wore their Lederhosen. The twelve-piece brass band play the traditional Austrian folk music and polkas all day long with the accompanying accordionist.</p><br>
<p>The event was a spectacular occasion that opened with everyone singing The Day of Our Father. The voices rang high into the heavens. After the song, the organizer of the event, Julius Firetag von Hohenberg, introduced the architect of the Schutzhaus, Herr Hanz Kornberger. He stepped up on the platform and gave his speech. Herr Kornberger was deeply honored for being given the opportunity to design and oversee the construction of the alpine shelter. For three long years, he and his men toiled under some very severe weather conditions to build the hikers&#39; refuge hut. Other time, he said the weather was so beautiful that only God himself could make our beautiful homeland. The architect acknowledged the fine work of the stonemasons, carpenters, roofers, local villagers, and farmers. He spoke about his closeness to the building. Every part of his soul was living within every piece of wood, every nail, and in every block of stone. When he was finished with his speech, Herr Kornberger handed the keys of the Schutzhaus to the Vice President and Director of the Austrian-Hungarian Alpine Club, Dr. Klotzberge. He accepted the keys with great honor and declared to preserve the integrity of this shelter for future generation. But, the festivities did not end there. The Reisalpe poem was read out loud:</p><br>

<p>will be your friend on this mountain grassland."</p><br>
<p>The crowd gave a warm applause at the end of the poem. The public announcement for the official opening has been made, and Herr Kornberger and Kerr Klotzberge cut the ribbon. The doors opened, and everyone gave a resounding cheer. When everyone walked inside they noticed the fine natural decorations used from the surrounding forest. It felt as if they became one with the mountain while inside the refuge hut. The Helenenthaler Alpine Club provided the natural forest decorations, and everyone celebrated with Edelweiss beer along with Vienna sausage and bread.</p><br>
<p>Ruth Reservoir  is the only reservoir on Californias Mad River. The reservoir and adjacent community were named for early settler Ruth McKnight. The reservoir was formed by construction of R. W. Matthews Dam in 1962 primarily for domestic and industrial water supply to Arcata, Eureka, and other communities around Humboldt Bay. The reservoir was not designed for flood control storage, but limited December, 1964, flooding to 51 percent of 1955 flow at Forest Glen  and 90 percent of the 1955 flood flow at Arcata. A 2-MW hydro-electric plant with two 1-MW turbine generators is powered by water released from the reservoir. The plant generates 5 GWh during an average water year. Dry-weather releases flow down the Mad River from the reservoir to be recovered by Humboldt Bay Municipal Water Districts Ranney collectors near Essex, California.</p><br>
<h2>Recreation</h2><br>
<p>The summer resort community of Ruth developed to expand recreational use of the reservoir. There are 174 cabin lease sites surrounding the reservoir. Registration and inspection is required for all watercraft prior to launching on Ruth Lake. Trailered and motorized boats may be launched only at the marina or at the Ruth Recreational Campground,</p><br>
<p>Fort George  was a palisaded earthwork fort built in 1779 by Great Britain during the American Revolutionary War in Castine, Maine. Located at a high point on the Bagaduce Peninsula, the fort was built as part of an initiative by the British to establish a new colony called New Ireland. It was the principal site of the British defense during the Massachusetts-organized Penobscot Expedition, a disastrous attempt to retake Castine launched in response to the British move. The British re-occupied Castine in the War of 1812 from September 1814 to April 1815, rebuilding Fort George and establishing smaller forts around it, again creating the New Ireland colony. The remains of the fort, now little more than its earthworks, are part of a state-owned and town-maintained park.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>Fort George is today a roughly square earthwork, about 200 ft on each side, with bastions at the corners that project out an additional 40 ft. These works are for the most part about 10 ft in height, although the easternmost bastion is 20 ft high. Features of the fort that have not survived include a palisade, moat, and gateway. The fort is one of a series of defenses erected by the British in 1779, which notably included the digging of a canal across much of the neck separating the Bagaduce Peninsula from the rest of the mainland.</p><br>
<p>Castine is set at a strategically significant location near the head of Penobscot Bay, and was a point of conflict at several times between the 17th and 19th centuries. Pursuant to plans for establishing a military presence on the coast of Maine as well as the colony of New Ireland, a British force led by General Francis McLean arrived off Castine in June 1779, seized the town, and established Fort George and other fortifications in the area. The state of Massachusetts, of which Maine was then a part, responded by raising a large militia force, which in an operation known as the Penobscot Expedition, disastrously failed in its attempt to dislodge the British. The fort was not abandoned by the British until 1784, and was not re-used by the United States until after the War of 1812.</p><br>
<p>The British re-occupied Castine in the War of 1812 from September 1814 to April 1815, again establishing New Ireland. They rebuilt Fort George, renamed the captured Fort Madison (aka Fort United States) as Fort Castine, and built Forts Furieuse, Gosselin, Griffith, and Sherbrooke. They also refurbished the peninsula&#39;s canal defense line. They withdrew after the cessation of hostilities, and following a brief period of American use, the fort was abandoned and demolished in 1819.</p><br>
<p>The state of Maine acquired the fort in 1940, and twenty years later provided funds to rebuild a magazine with other improvements. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. Fort George is the site of Majabigwaduce, the location for Bernard Cornwell&#39;s 2010 book The Fort, which is about the Penobscot Expedition.</p><br>
<p>The Cora F. Cressey was a five masted 273 ft wooden-hulled freight schooner operating in the coasting trade along the east coast of the United States. Built in 1902, she served in that trade until 1928. After serving for a time as a floating nightclub, her hulk was towed to the Keene Narrows in Bremen, Maine, where it was scuttled to serve as a breakwater for a lobster operation. Despite its deteriorating condition, the hulk is one of the largest surviving wooden hulls in the United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>Cora F. Cressey was built in 1902 at the Percy and Small Shipyard (now the campus of the Maine Maritime Museum) in Bath, Maine. As built, she was a five-masted schooner, 273 ft long, with a beam of 45.4 ft and a hold depth of 27.9 ft. The hull was not diagonally braced, but did have iron belts for reinforcement. She had a registered capacity of 2499 gross tons and 2089 net tons. She was fitted with two decks and had a typical crew complement of eleven. She had a small steam donkey engine for raising anchors and sails, but not propulsion.</p><br>
<h2>Operational history</h2><br>
<p>Cora F. Cressey was primarily engaged in transporting coal along the eastern seaboard of the United State from southern ports to the north. Her high bow is credited with helping her survive a gale in 1924 that caused the Wyoming, the largest schooner ever built, to sink. In service until 1928, she was converted for use as a floating nightclub in Boston in 1929. Later she was towed to Gloucester, Massachusetts and Providence, Rhode Island in the same role.</p><br>
<p>In 1938 her masts were removed and she was purchased by the owner of a lobster operation in Bremen, Maine. She was towed to the Keene Narrows, between the mainland and Oar Island, and partially filled with sand to serve as a lobster pound. Holes were cut in her hull in an unsuccessful bid to improve circulation, and she ended up acting as a breakwater for lobster pens set between her and the shore. In 1988, a 40 ft section of her hull fell off. Portions of her fixtures and equipment were removed prior to her use as a breakwater, and survive as display items at the Maine Maritime Museum.</p><br>
<h2>Significance</h2><br>
<p>The badly deteriorating hulk of Cora F. Cressey is one of the largest surviving wooden hulls in the United States. Due to the structural limitations of wooden construction, ships of this size were often leaky, and could not withstand the stresses of heavy weather and sustained hard sailing. Although the largest had up to seven masts, sail power put them at a competitive disadvantage with steam-powered vessels, which could make passage more reliably. There are no known surviving six- or seven-masted wooden schooner hulls.</p><br>
<p>The Colman Building is a historic office building located in Seattle, Washington. It occupies a half of a block in downtown Seattle in proximity to Pioneer Square, bound by First Avenue, Marion and Columbia Streets. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as well as being a City of Seattle landmark. The building was built in several stages with a change of design between 1889 and 1906. It was commissioned by Scottish immigrant and master machinist James Colman who arrived in Seattle in 1872. Architect Stephen Meany designed the original plans while the reconstruction that is visible today was designed by August Tidemand inspired by the Chicago School with less ornamentation and large pivoting windows. The cast iron elements from the original building remain on the first floor, while the second floor was rebuilt of rusticated stone. Four floors of red brick trimmed with marble were built on top of this. The building is crowned with a copper cornice.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<h3>James Colman and the first Colman Building</h3><br>
<p>James Colman owned the entire block of First Avenue between Columbia and Marion Streets. According to legend, he came to acquire the property when he towed the wrecked ship Windward to shore there intending to salvage it. When the Colman building was later built on the site, the ship&#39;s hull was surrounded by land and buried under the foundation where it still lies in the sub-basement.</p><br>
<p>In 1888, James Colman commissioned architect Stephen Meany to design a large office building that would occupy his property. His design was an ornate five story Romanesque edifice faced in plaster and featuring a large central tower. While the cornerstone was laid in early 1889, Colman put off construction in order to keep collecting rents on buildings still on the property as long as possible. Construction of the building was made easier when the Great Seattle Fire of 1889 wiped out all of the buildings on the block. Construction commenced as soon as the debris was cleared.</p><br>
<p>During the rebuilding of Seattle in the aftermath of the fire, a huge surplus of office space was being created with all of the multi-story structures being built simultaneously. Noticing this, Colman halted construction of the building, which had only reached its second floor. It remained in this unfinished form for the next fifteen years. In the meantime, the building housed many important businesses and social clubs like the Elks and the Seattle Bureau of Information, whose sole purpose was to keep the newspapers in on the East coast supplied with good news about the city. The Customs House operated within the Colman Building as well as the Circuit Court. Also during this time, Colman erected a stone warehouse occupying the other half of the block, known as The Colman Block Annex, which has since been demolished for a parking lot.</p><br>
<h3>Reconstruction</h3><br>
<p>Construction of the Colman Building was finally resumed in February 1904 and by this time, architectural tastes had changed, and Colman hired Norwegian architect August Tidemand, who had designed the Colman Block Annex, to completely rebuild the building in a Chicago School style while still echoing the building&#39;s intended 1889 layout. Tenants were moved to the nearby Burke Building until construction finished. Perks of the new building would include 300 offices, fireproof construction and stair fire escapes. Another improvement over the old building would be the addition of three elevators with 24-hour operators. As construction began in early 1904 The Seattle Times noted the improved service over that of the Colman Building at the time:</p><br>
<p>Reconstruction of the building involved removing most of the brick facade to be replaced with stone. Several cast iron elements including the entrance arch and storefront columns were retained and integrated into the new facade. When completed in 1906, the new building rose six stories high and cost $150,000.</p><br>
<p>The Colman Building housed several businesses that catered to miners during the Alaska Gold Rush as well as housing several administrative offices for the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in 1908-9.</p><br>
<p>The lobby of the building was completely rebuilt in 1930 with designs by Seattle architect Arthur Loveless.</p><br>
<h3>Recent history</h3><br>
<p>On March 16, 1972, the Colman Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In October 1978, the building was purchased by CHG-City Center Investors, who began a ten-year, three phase process of restoring the building to its original grandeur. On March 19, 1990, the Colman Building became a City of Seattle Landmark (Ordinance #114993) on nomination by CHG International of Federal Way, Washington, with James Mason as their agent.</p><br>
<p>The Colman Building was brought back to local ownership in 1997 when Triad Development purchased the building for $7.1 million from Plaza Realty Holdings Inc. of Long Beach, California. They had in turn purchased the building out of foreclosure in 1996. Triad spent over two million dollars in renovations including new air conditioning and better interior lighting as well improving street level businesses.</p><br>
<p>The Circle Ranch, also known as the R.L. Miller Ranch has been continuously operated as a working cattle ranch for more than 100 years. Located in Sublette County, Wyoming, it was first occupied as a homestead by Otto Liefer between 1878 and 1880. Liefer sold his claim to James Mickelson in 1895, who developed the ranch into one of the largest ranching operations in the area. The ranch has remained in the Mickelson family ever since.</p><br>
<p>The cottonwood log Liefer cabin remains standing, along with a cabin built about the same time by Nicolas Swan. Together, they are the oldest permanent structures standing in Sublette County. The early cabins are surrounded by ranch buildings built by the Mickelson-Miller family, including a 1905 ranch house. By 1915 Mickelson&#39;s holdings in the area amounted to 20,000 acres, with 6000 cattle.</p><br>
<p>The Circle Ranch was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.</p><br>
<p>Umiasussuk  is a 620 m mountain in the Qaasuitsup municipality in northwestern Greenland, located in the northern part of Qaarsorsuaq Island in the Upernavik Archipelago. The name of the mountain means "a boat-shaped mountain" in the Greenlandic language.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>Umiasussuk is a standalone mountain, a flooded peak, whose trapezoid shape is the landmark of Upernavik town, visible from the Upernavik Airport 7 km away, and from the entire eastern and northern coast of Upernavik Island.</p><br>
<p>Via a small isthmus in the east, the mountain is connected with the remainder of the large Qaarsorsuaq Island. To the north, the Torsuut strait separates the mountain from Atilissuaq Island. To the west, the low Akia Island separates the mountain from Upernavik Island.</p><br>
<p>Semnoz is a mountain of Haute-Savoie, France. It lies in the Bauges range. It has an altitude of 1,699 m above sea level. The mountain is crossed by the D41/D110 road near to the Crêt de Chatillon at an altitude of 1,660 m.</p><br>
<h2>Tour de France</h2><br>
<p>The penultimate stage of the 2013 Tour de France (Stage 20) saw a summit finish on Semnoz, 125 km after departing from Annecy. The mountain has featured in the Tour previously, but this was during a neutralized stage in the wake of the 1998 Festina affair.</p><br>
<h2>Details of the climb</h2><br>
<p>The Crêt de Chatillon can be reached by road from three directions. From the south, the climb via the D110 commences at the village of Leschaux from where the ascent is 13.4 km long climbing 763 m at an average gradient of 5.7% with a maximum gradient of 10.2%.</p><br>
<p>From the north, the climb via the D41 commences in Annecy, from where the road is 17.4 km long climbing 1,212 m with an average gradient of 7%.</p><br>
<p>From the west, the climb commences at Quintal and uses the D241 before reaching the D41 after 3.5 km. The total climb is 11.3 km long gaining 922 m in height at an average gradient of 8.2%. This is the route used on Stage 20 of the 2013 Tour de France and is ranked as an Hors catégorie climb. The route to the summit from the start at Annecy crosses the Col de Leschaux (944 m) after 17.5 km before descending to Saint-Jean-d&#39;Arvey.</p><br>
<p>The Rax-Schneeberg Group  is a mountain range in the Northern Limestone Alps on the Styrian-Lower Austrian border in Austria.</p><br>
<h2>Location</h2><br>
<p>According to the official classification of the Eastern Alps by the Alpine Club (Alpenvereinseinteilung der Ostalpen), the Rax-Schneeberg Group is bounded by the following divisions to neighbouring groups of mountains:</p><br>
<p>to the north by the Klostertaler Gscheid – Klausgraben – Mamauwiese – Sebastiansbach – Puchberg</p><br>
<p>to the northeast by the valley of the River Sierning as far as Ternitz</p><br>
<p>to the south by the line: Ternitz – Schwarza near Gloggnitz – Schottwien – Semmering – Mürzzuschlag – Mürz near Kapellen</p><br>
<p>to the west by the Altenberg valley – Naßkamm – Naßbach – Schwarza – Voisbach as far as the Klostertaler Gscheid.</p><br>
<h2>Summits</h2><br>
<p>The highest point in the limestone massif of the Schneeberg is the Klosterwappen at. Its nearby twin peak is known as the Kaiserstein. The two summits are the highest mountains in the state of Lower Austria. The highest two elevations in the Rax massif are the Heukuppe at and the Scheibwaldhöhe at.</p><br>
<p>Other peaks are the Große Scheibe, the Tratenkogel, the Ochnerhöhe and the Kreuzberg.</p><br>
<h2>Protected areas</h2><br>
<p>The Rax Alpine region, together with the Schneealpe and Schneeberg belong to the river source protected area (Quellschutzgebiet) of the First Vienna Mountain Spring Pipeline (I. Wiener Hochquellenwasserleitung). The Schneeberg and Rax are separated by the Höllental valley and are two of Vienna&#39;s "local mountains" or Hausberge.</p><br>
<p>The Schneeberg and Rax lie within the Northeastern Border Alps: Hohe Wand-Schneeberg-Rax Special Area of Conservation (FFH-Gebiet Nordöstliche Randalpen: Hohe Wand-Schneeberg-Rax).</p><br>
<h2>Schneeberg Railway</h2><br>
<p>The Schneeberg has been linked for over 100 years by the Schneeberg Railway (Schneebergbahn), a cog railway that climbs to a height of 1,800 m. The twin peaks may be reached from the valley station in one to two hours. The footpath runs eastwards over the Hengst or westwards through the Fadenwände.</p><br>
<p>There are trails to the Rax from the mountain spa of Puchberg am Schneeberg, and from the wild Höllental valley to the south. In addition the Schneeberg may be approached from Payerbach, Prigglitz and Reichenau via the Gahns.</p><br>
<p>The Judge Isaac Wilson House is a historic residence in Batavia, Illinois. It was the home of Isaac Wilson, a former Congressman who moved to the Batavia region and later named the settlement. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Isaac Wilson moved from Batavia, New York to Batavia, Illinois in 1835, two years after the first settlers arrived in the area. He was previously the judge of the Genesee County Court and a member of the New York State Assembly. He was elected to the 18th United States Congress with the Democratic-Republican Party, supporting the Adams-Clay ticket. He was the first representative voted by New Yorks 29th congressional district. Wilson built a 14 by log cabin on his Batavia land claim. Isaac Wilsons only son Isaac Grant Wilson became a prominent judge in Kane County, earning the elder judge the nickname "Daddy" Wilson. Wilson named the growing settlement Batavia in 1840. A year later he was named the town&#39;s first postmaster, and he probably used his house as the post office.</p><br>
<p>The two-story house was constructed during Wilsons term as postmaster, in 1843. The lumber was produced locally with Batavias sawmills. He lived in his house until his death in 1848. The house (and much of the surrounding neighborhood) remained with his heirs for many years. The Chicago and Aurora Railroad as built in 1850, and Wilson&#39;s descendents were able to board the train from their front lawn. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 10, 1985.</p><br>
<p>The Judge Isaac Wilson house is a vernacular Greek Revival frame house. The entrance is on the north-northeast corner with a six-panel door. The main portion of the home is 23.5 by with eight double-hung sash windows on the first floor and three on the second. The floors are constructed with ash and chestnut lumbar. The southeast portion of the first floor was used as the fireplace room. A two-room basement lies beneath the first floor.</p><br>
<p>Thunder Mountain is located in the northern part of the Great Western Divide, a sub-range of the Sierra Nevada in California. The summit marks a point on the boundary between Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks and is 0.6 mi north of Table Mountain and south 2.8 mi Mount Brewer. Thunder pass, on the mountains east side, has an elevation of 12,720+ feet . This pass marks the western end of the Kings-Kern Divide.</p><br>
<p>The mountain was named by George R. Davis, a topographer with the United States Geological Survey. He made the first ascent, in August 1905, to establish a benchmark on the summit.</p><br>
<p>The name appears on the Mt. Whitney, USGS 30 minute topographic map of 1905,</p><br>
<p>and was officially recognized by the Board on Geographic Names in 1928.</p><br>
<p>Inyan Kara Mountain  is a mountain associated with the Bear Lodge Mountains of Crook County, Wyoming  that is considered sacred by the Lakota people, particularly for mothers in childbirth. Inyan Kara stands apart from the main body of the Black Hills, with an elevation of 6,368 ft. The mountain was stated to rumble on quiet days by the local Native Americans and by early explorers. No mention of the noises are found after 1833; the noise has been attributed to gas escaping from burning coal seams.</p><br>
<p>The peak was visited by George Armstrong Custer during Custer&#39;s 1874 Black Hills Expedition, reaching the summit on July 23.</p><br>
<p>The peak was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.</p><br>

<p>Lightning Lake is a lake located in E. C. Manning Provincial Park, British Columbia, Canada. The lake is freshwater and is located within the Similkameen-Okanagan forest district. The lake is unusual as it drains in two directions, into Flash Lake in the south and the Similkameen River to the north. The current lake is not a naturally occurring lake, as at the north end, near the day-use area, there is an earthen dam. The lake is very shallow and near the end of the summer season, the narrows under the Rainbow Bridge are either very shallow or dry.</p><br>
<h2>Recreation</h2><br>
<p>Lightning Lake is the mains summer tourism feature within Manning Park. Both canoes and rowboats are available for rental from the day-use area. The lake provides a paved boat launch; however, powercraft and jet-skis are prohibited on the lake. Parking at the lake free for all vehicles, and overnight parking is permitted as there are back-country campgrounds located at multiple locations along the Lightning Lakes chain. Fishing is permitted within the park.</p><br>
<h3>Hiking</h3><br>
<p>The lake is skirted by a 9 km level-grade hiking-only trail, which can be halved by taking the Rainbow Bridge at the narrows of the lake. The day-use parking area serves also as a parking area for the Windy Joe, Mount Frosty, and Lightning Lakes Chain hike.</p><br>
<h3>Camping</h3><br>
<p>There are two drive-in camping areas, maintained by Manning Park Resort for BC Parks, on Lightning Lake. The first is Lone Duck Group Camp, which is open year-round, and the Lightning Lake Campground, which is a trailer-camping facility with flush toilets. There are no hike-in campgrounds on Lightning Lake due to its proximity to roads.</p><br>
<h2>Lightning Lakes Chain</h2><br>
<p>Lightning Lake is the first of the four lakes on the Lightning Lakes chain, all of which are located within E. C. Manning Provincial Park. The entire chain is accessible by maintained hiking trails and there are campgrounds on the other lakes.</p><br>

<p>Inussulissuaq Island  is a small uninhabited island in the Melville Bay region of the Upernavik Archipelago in the Qaasuitsup municipality in northwestern Greenland. The name of the island means "a large cairn" in the Greenlandic language.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>Inussulissuaq Island is located in the northern part of Inussulik Bay, approximately 6 km south of Kiatassuaq Island, and 8.5 km west of the mainland Sanningassorsuaq Peninsula. There is a small freshwater lake on the southern coast. The highest point on the island is an unnamed summit at 560 m.</p><br>
<h3>Promontories</h3><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Inussullissuaq Island has never been permanently inhabited due to its small size. In 1930 it briefly served as a polar station for Knud Rasmussen, the Greenlandic polar explorer and anthropologist. The station was named Bjørne Borg (or Bjørneborg, a bear castle). Its ruins can still be found on the island.</p><br>
<h2>Settlement</h2><br>
<p>Kullorsuaq is the closest settlement to the island, located on an island of the same name to the north of Kiatassuaq Island, 19.6 km away. In the south, the Nuussuaq village on the southern coast of Nuussuaq Peninsula is located 33.4 km. The island is accessible only by boat, and thus the distances to reach it are longer due to the need to navigate around the Kiatassuaq Island and Nuussuaq Peninsula, respectively.</p><br>
<p>Ranch A, near Beulah, Wyoming, was built as a vacation retreat for newspaper publisher Moses Annenberg. The original log ranch structures in Sand Creek Canyon were designed in the rustic style by architect Ray Ewing. The principal building, a large log lodge, was built in 1932. Other buildings constructed at the time included a garage with an upstairs apartment, a barn, a hydroelectric power plant, stone entrance arches and a pump house. The lodge was furnished with Western furniture and light fixtures made by noted designer Thomas C. Molesworth. Many of these furnishings, among the first of Molesworth&#39;s career, are now the property of the state of Wyoming and are in the Wyoming State Museum.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Annenberg bought the property around November 1927 from Frank LaPlante. Annenberg and his son Walter were going to Yellowstone National Park and stopped to eat in Beulah. Impressed with the trout he was served, Annenberg inquired after the property where the trout was raised. He bought the 650 acres ranch from LaPlante on the spot the next day for $27,000 in cash, which Annenberg produced from his pocket. Annenberg added more parcels to bring total acreage to more than 2,000 acres. Moses and Walter Annenberg were the chief users of the ranch; Sadie Annenberg and her daughters came to the ranch only once. Guests arrived by rail at Aladdin, Wyoming, where the tracks ended, on private railcars owned by Annenberg. As publisher of the Daily Racing Form, Annenberg had a telephone communication center installed in the basement for coordination of horse racing information.</p><br>
<p>The design work was done by South Dakota architect Ray Ewing, who hired the Juso Brothers to build the structures. The Jusos were Finnish immigrants who used traditional Finnish log building practices to fell, trim and erect the logs for the lodge and supporting structures. Work took place during the Great Depression, employing sixty to seventy workers, a significant project for the local economy.</p><br>
<p>Annenberg came under Federal investigation for his business practices in the late 1930s and was convicted of income tax evasion in 1940, was imprisoned, and died shortly after his release in 1942. Annenberg&#39;s heirs sold the ranch to Wyoming governor Nels Smith, Bill Walker (Cheyenne, Wyoming) and Sam Keener (Salem, Ohio). Ranch A was used as a dude ranch for twenty years, and was featured in an October 1956 issue of National Geographic. In 1963 the Fish and Wildlife Service bought the ranch, using it as a genetics laboratory for salmonid research under the name "Spearfish Fisheries Center Complex." After 1979 the genetic research was replaced by fish diet research. The ranch was deeded to the state of Wyoming in 1996 for educational purposes.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>Sand Creek is a spring-fed stream with a consistent water temperature that is ideal for raising fish. The complex is located on the floor of the canyon with sandstone cliffs rising to either side. The lodge is sited near the northern canyon wall. Square in plan, the two story lodge measures about 74 ft by 75 ft. The second story overhangs the first, creating a long veranda across the front of the building, supported by stone piers with standing log sections as columns. The entrance is a knotty pine double door with iron strap hardware. The second story is a side gable dominated by shed dormers extending nearly the full width of the building, front and back. A small cross gable marks the center of the second story. A walkway extends directly from the rear of the second floor to the hillside behind. The interior features an atrium extending to the roof, surrounded by living spaces on both levels, framed in log construction.</p><br>
<p>The garage is also of log construction, measuring 44 ft by 44 ft, with three bays for vehicles, one of which has since been closed in. The second floor is framed as a smaller version of the lodge, and houses a three-bedroom caretaker&#39;s apartment.</p><br>
<p>The barn was built about 1935 and measures about 63 ft by 43 ft. The peeled log walls rest on a concrete foundation. A gambrel roof crowns the two story structure. Other contributing structures include the pump house (1932), built in stucco with applied half-timber detailing and a rolled roof edge. The 1933 hydroelectric plant is similar in style and construction. Dams are associated with each building. A root cellar, stone walls, a lily pond and its feeder canal all date from the historical period.</p><br>
<p>Additional buildings include the fish hatchery lab, a 1967 brick building, the distinctive Sawtooth Building (ca. 1964) or Wet Laboratory, another hatchery building with a sawtooth roof profile, and several apartments.</p><br>
<p>Ranch A presently comprises 645 acres, owned by the state of Wyoming. It is managed by the Ranch A Restoration Foundation as an education center. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.</p><br>
<h2>Legislation</h2><br>
<p>On April 23, 2013, Congresswoman Cynthia Lummis introduced the Ranch A Consolidation and Management Improvement Act (H.R. 1684; 113th Congress). If passed, the bill would require the federal government to transfer 10 acres of federal lands in the Black Hills National Forest to the state of Wyoming. Wyoming would use the land to connect different, separated pieces of Ranch A. The bill would also remove current restrictions placed on the land that prevents the foundation managing the site from some types of fundraising. Currently, outside groups are not allowed to rent any of the property, which would change under this bill, increasing revenue.</p><br>
<p>Lochinvar is an antebellum home near Pontotoc, Mississippi built by Robert Gordon c. 1836.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>The house&#39;s heart pine woodwork and handmade bricks highlight the attention to detail of its wealthy owner and the Scottish architects and builders he employed. Solid Doric style columns from a castle in Scotland support the front porches, and the balcony railing is carved to resemble English lace. An entirely self-supporting spiral staircase winds to the second floor, and a secret stairway is set between the walls in the back of the house.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The land on which the home stands was bought by Gordon from a Chickasaw woman, Molly Gunn, daughter of William Colbert and wife of James Gunn. Robert Gordon had immigrated to Cotton Gin Port, Mississippi, from Scotland. He excelled as a trader in the Native American communities and a landowner, and founded the town of Aberdeen in Monroe County, Mississippi. After the Chickasaw Cession of 1832 he purchased two sections of land near Pontotoc, where he built Lochinvar in 1836. He married Mary Elizabeth Walton. Their son, James Gordon, grew up in the house, married Carolina Virginia Wiley, and had two children, Annie and Robert James. James Gordon served as an officer in the Confederate Army under Jeb Stuart and Nathan Bedford Forrest, and he was briefly suspected of conspiring with John Wilkes Booth in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. James Gordon represented Chickasaw County in the Mississippi legislature in 1857, 1878, 1886, and 1904–1908; and in December 1909 Governor Edmond F. Noel appointed him to fill the unexpired term of USA Senator Anselm J. McLaurin until the state legislature could elect a new senator in February 1910. James Gordon inherited Lochinvar when his father died in 1867. Lochinvar remained in the Gordon family until 1900, when J. D. Fontaine, an attorney in Pontotoc, Mississippi, bought it to use as a tenant house. Dr. Forrest Tutor and his wife, Dr. Janis Burns Tutor, purchased the home from Fontaine&#39;s son in 1966 and restored it. The house is on the National Register of Historic Places. Heavily damaged by a tornado in 2001, Lochinvar has been restored by the Tutors to its former glory. <p>The Rouffignac cave, situated within the French commune of Rouffignac-Saint-Cernin-de-Reilhac in the Dordogne département, contains over 250 engravings and cave paintings dating back to the Upper Paleolithic.</p><br>
<h2>Geography and description of the cave</h2><br>
<p>The Cave of the hundred mammoths, also known as Miremont cave, Cro des Cluzeau or Cro de Granville, is situated about 5 km south of Rouffignac on a hill slope along the right hand side of the La Binche river, a left tributary of the Manaurie. Perched only about one kilometer farther east on the opposite side of the valley is the little village of Fleurac. The country rocks of the cave are flat-lying limestones belonging to the uppermost Coniacian; they are very rich in flint nodules. These rocks together with overlying Santonian rocks form the limestone plateau of Légal, the divide between the drainage basins of the rivers Lisle and Vézère.</p><br>
<p>The Rouffignac cave and the Villars Cave possess the most extensive cave system of the Périgord with more than 8 km of underground passageways. There are 10 natural shafts that lead to a deeper level. It is astonishing that most of the artistic representations nearly always seem to be associated with these dangerous places. So far, a further 4 km of passageways have been explored in this deeper level. Below the deeper level exists a bottom level with a small underground rivulet. Visitors of the cave have to board an electric train that takes them about 2 km into the interior.</p><br>
<p>The plan of the cave reveals a fractal-like dendritic pattern that is not random but organized along certain preferred directions. Presumably the cave was formed during the Pliocene about 3 to 2 million years ago. Water had infiltrated the bedrock along certain zones of weakness and dissolved the limestone. Today this process has come to an end, the cave is mostly dry except for the rivulet along the base level.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Rouffignac cave was already mentioned in 1575 by François de Belleforest. In his Cosmographie universelle he cites “paintings and animal traces”. In the 19th century the cave was known as a tourist attraction. Famous archeologists like Henri Breuil, André Glory and Martel had visited the cave in the early 20th century, but it was only in 1956 when Louis-René Nougier and Romain Robert, two prehistorians from the Pyrenees, rediscovered and confirmed the cave art. During the Second World War the cave had served as a hide-out for the French Résistance. In 1959 the cave was officially opened for visitors.</p><br>
<p>In conjunction with other caves and abris of the Vézère valley the Rouffignac cave was classified a Monument historique in 1957 and a world heritage site in 1979 by the UNESCO.</p><br>
<p>The cave is under private ownership.</p><br>
<h2>Artistic representations</h2><br>
<p>The artistic representations in the cave were mainly executed as engravings or black contour drawings. In contrast with the caves in Lascaux and Font-de-Gaume the representations in the Rouffignac cave are not polychrome. So far 224 animal representations and 4 human figures have been registered. The animal representations can be subdivided as follows:</p><br>
<p>158 mammoths, i.e. 70% of all represented animals.</p><br>
<p>28 bisons.</p><br>
<p>15 horses.</p><br>
<p>12 capricorns.</p><br>
<p>10 woolly rhinoceros.</p><br>
<p>Additionally there is one single cave bear. Amongst the six animal groups cited the mammoths take on a prominent role. The woolly rhinoceros are also quite common compared to other similar caves where they always appear as an absolute rarity.</p><br>
<p>Signs are somewhat underrepresented with 17 tectiform (house-like) and 6 serpentiform (snake-like) signs being known. Fairly common are finger flutings, macaroni- or meander-like traces that take up a surface of 500 m&sup2; and decorate walls and ceilings. In September 2011 Jess Cooney, a Cambridge archeologist, and Dr Leslie Van Gelder of Walden University, USA announced that their research had identified the artists who had created a large proportion of the flutings to be children as young as three years old. 63 animal representations alone are found on the ceiling of the so-called Le Grand Plafond chamber. Here again the representations are associated with a shaft.</p><br>
<h2>Cave bears</h2><br>
<p>The presence of cave bears in the Rouffignac cave is attested by scratch marks on the walls and also by their resting places of quite an impressive size.</p><br>
<h2>Age</h2><br>
<p>Because of the general lack of artifacts (a single blade was found so far) and occupation traces the Rouffignac cave has not been dated directly. According to André Leroi-Gourhan the style of the representations can be attributed to his style IV and belong therefore into the Middle Magdalenian, about 13,000 years BP.</p><br>
<p>Reconnaissance excavations in front of the entry of the cave found traces of human occupations (several fireplaces, animal bones and stone tools) dating back to the Mesolithic (Tardenoisian and Sauveterrian) and to the Neolithic. Some iron age remains capped the deposits. Therefore, mesolithic hunters must have had their encampment in front of the cave from about 9,200 to 7,800 years BP. In the Sauveterrian level geometrically shaped microliths were found, the so-called Rouffignac heads. The neolithic and iron age levels yielded remnants of burials.</p><br>
<h2>Visiting the cave</h2><br>
<p>The Rouffignac cave is open to the public between April 1 and November 1. The number of visitors is restricted to 550 per day.</p><br>
<p>The Belmont Mountains are a 25 mi  long, arid, low elevation mountain range about 50 mi west of Phoenix, Arizona in the northern Sonoran Desert, north of the Gila River. The range is in the south of a region of two parallel washes; the Bouse Wash flows northwest to the Colorado River, and the Centennial Wash flows southeast to meet the Gila River.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The Belmont Mountains are a northwest by southeast trending range, mostly of low hills; the range curves westwards at the west end. At the west, the range is partially connected to the Big Horn Mountains to the southwest, and between the two ranges is the Hummingbird Springs Wilderness. The wilderness takes up much of the Belmonts northwest, and the northeast half of the Big Horns. Most of the rest of the small Big Horn Mountains is the Big Horn Mountains Wilderness. Valleys border both mountain ranges, to the northeast, and the southwest.</p><br>
<p>The highest peak in the Belmont Mountains is Sugarloaf Mountain, at 3,418 ft, located at 33.67756&deg;N latitude, 113.08736&deg;W longitude; it is at the northeast of the Hummingbird Springs Wilderness.</p><br>
<p>The center of the range is at Belmont Mountain, located at 33.644758&deg;N latitude, 112.933236&deg;W longitude.</p><br>
<h2>Access</h2><br>
<p>The north of the Belmont Range can be reached from Aguila, Arizona on USA Route 60 in Arizona. The south of the range can be reached from Interstate 10 in Arizona, near Tonopah.</p><br>

<p>Cerro Mohinora is an extinct volcano that is part of the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range in the Mexican state of Chihuahua located in the municipality of Guadalupe y Calvo. Cerro Mohinora is the highest point in the state of Chihuahua reaching an elevation of 10,827 ft  above sea level. The climate of the mountain is extremely cold in the winter and temperate to semi-cold in the summer.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>The mountain began to form during Paleogene geologic period characterized by intense volcanic activity in the area throwing lava and ash onto the surrounding plateau and creating the Sierra Madre Occidental. Cerro Mohinora was raised to an elevation over 3,300 m above sea level during the Pleistocene by intense tectonic activity. The mountain is mainly composed of igneous rock.</p><br>
<h2>Climate</h2><br>
<p>Using the Köppen climate classification the climate of the mountain is humid continental climate (Dfb). Summers are cool with temperatures rarely reaching 25 °C (77 °F) and summer lows fall below 10 °C (50 °F) regularly. There are heavy rainstorms from June to October. Winters are very cold with maximum high reaching 0 °C (32 °F) and reaching a maximum low of -31 °C (-24 °F). Winter snowstorms with high winds are common and typically over 1 meter (~3 ft) of snow per season.</p><br>
<p>The Dayton Masonic Center, formerly known as the Dayton Masonic Temple, is a significant building in Dayton, Ohio.</p><br>
<p>It was built by a Masonic Temple Association formed from 14 Masonic groups. The building was completed over a 2-year, 9-month period by 450 workers, "a majority of whom were Masonic Brethren", about which it was said: "Without thought of honor or gain, these men gave unstintingly of their time, abilities and means, sparing neither themselves nor their personal interests to advance this building project to its happy fulfillment."</p><br>
<p>The building is 265 ft long by 190 ft wide by 80 ft high, and encloses 5,000,000 cuft. It is constructed of steel, cement, and stone, including 55,000 cuft of Bedford stone and 15,000 cuft hard limestone and marble from Vermont, Alabama and Tennessee ("marble used for interior floors, wainscotings, partitions and stairways").</p><br>
<p>It is a contributing property in the Steele&#39;s Hill-Grafton Hill Historic District, a historic district that was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.</p><br>
<p>Wyoming Mercantile, also known as the Aladdin General Store is a preserved small-town general store in Aladdin, Wyoming. The store, which remains in operation, was built in 1896 by Amos Robinson as Wyoming Mercantile. Robinson died the same year, and the store went to Mahlon S. Kemmerer, who placed his properties, including the Wyoming and Missouri Valley Railroad, under the Wyoming Mercantile umbrella. Railroading continued until 1927. The store has continued, serving as a post office, bar, freight station and gas station.</p><br>
<p>The wood framed store consists of a two-story gabled main section with a one-story shed addition on the left side. The gable is covered by a squared false front that hides most of the main gable and all of the shed. A light roofed porch spans the front of the ground floor. The interior of the ground floor consists of five rooms: the general store, liquor store, post office, store room, and the addition, which is also used for storage. The walls and ceiling in the post office are covered with matchstick paneling, while the counter is matchstick paneled in the store. The store retains its original fixtures. The addition is a plain enclosure with dirt floors and no interior cladding. Upstairs are five rooms and a hallway, all with plaster walls, all used for storage.</p><br>
<p>The population of Aladdin, never much more than 50, has declined to about twelve. The store still serves the community.</p><br>
<p>The town of Kemmerer, Wyoming was named after Mahlon Kemmerer.</p><br>
<p>The Aladdin General Store was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.</p><br>
<p>Sawmill Geyser, named for the whirring sound it makes during its eruption, is a geyser in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, United States. The geyser was named by Antoine Schoenborn of the Hayden Geological Survey of 1871.</p><br>
<p>Sawmill is the largest geyser in the Sawmill Complex, a region of geothermal features located in Upper Geyser Basin approximately 10 feet off the path. The geyser has an irregular pattern of eruption due to the underground structural interconnectivity which is characteristic of geyser complexes. Despite this, it tends to have a delay around 1 to 3 hours between eruptions. Often, Sawmill will erupt after the nearby Spasmodic Geyser, but only if Penta Geyser, another significant geyser in the complex, does not erupt first. If Penta erupts before Sawmill, Sawmill is cut off from water, and cannot erupt until the basin is reloaded, indicated by an eruption by Spasmodic. Another eruption indicator is when Sawmill fills with the rest of the geyser&#39;s water in the Sawmill Complex or starts to overflow, bubbles tend to rise to the surface. This indicates that an eruption is near. Sawmill drains after its eruptions, and if it had a large eruption prior, unusual behavior can occur in other geysers in the area.</p><br>
<p>The Dundee Township Historic District is a set of sixty-five buildings in Dundee Township, Kane County Illinois. Buildings in the district are found in East Dundee, West Dundee, and Carpentersville. The district represents the development of the upper Fox River Valley from 1870 to the 1920s. Dundee Township became an important industrial area, especially following the construction of the Dundee Brick Company in West Dundee and the Illinois Iron and Bolt Company in Carpentersville. Also included in the district are a variety of Queen Anne, Italianate, and Greek Revival style houses and Gothic Revival churches. The majority of the historic district lies within the boundaries of West Dundee. It was added to the National Register of Historical Places in 1975.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>West Dundee was first settled in 1834 by Jesse H. Newman. Shortly afterward, Newman&#39;s travel mate Joseph Russell erected his house on the east side of the Fox River, effectively becoming the first settler of East Dundee. Charles W. and Daniel G. Carpenter settled in what would become Carpentersville in 1837. Both East and West Dundee were platted in the early 1840s, and Carpentersville was platted in 1851. The Dundee Brick Company was an important early employer, starting in 1852. West Dundee was incorporated in 1867 and East Dundee followed four years later. The Illinois Iron and Bolt Company opened in Carpentersville in 1870. Dairy production became an important source of income for East and West Dundee in the 1870s. The period presently reflected in the historic district stretches from 1870 to the 1920s.</p><br>
<p>Most of the properties in the district are within the bounds of West Dundee. The Dundee Cemetery first saw use in 1841, though it did not officially become a cemetery until 1862. A Baptist church was built in 1865 on the corner of Fourth and Main Streets, which later was sold to the Methodist congregation. Union School was originally built by Richter & Morris in 1873, but was destroyed in a fire five years later. It was reconstructed that year in the same design, and is now used by School District #300. Several important commercial properties were established along Main Street starting in the 1870s, including the First National Bank, Dundee State Bank, the Cleveland Drug Store, and the Dundee House Hotel. The First Congregational Church was also built on this strip in 1902, as did the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in 1912. St. James Episcopal Church was built in 1904 to serve the local Episcopalian congregation. In 1909, West Dundee constructed its Village Hall based on plans by George F. Morris of Elgin. St. Catherine&#39;s Catholic Church and School (1914, school added 1926) was an important church for Italian immigrants wishing to practice their faith while working for the Illinois Iron and Bolt Company.</p><br>
<p>In East Dundee, the Spring Mill was first built in 1837, though only one large black storage building remains. Most of the mill was demolished following financial troubles during The Great Depression. The Haeger Pottery Plant was built in 1871 for David H. Haeger. It initially provided bricks for Chicago following The Great Chicago Fire and later produced art pottery. Immanuel Lutheran Church was built in 1886 to serve German immigrants. It had the largest membership in Dundee Township.</p><br>
<p>The Atlantic Flour Mills, built in 1846, are the oldest buildings in Carpentersville. The 1871 Illinois Iron and Bolt Company building was one of the major employers of the town. The Star Manufacturing Company was built in the early 1870s to make agricultural supplies and farm machinery. The Carpenter Store was built in 1877 and owned by the Carpenter family. Union Church Congregational and Parsonage was donated by Angelo and Mary Carpenter and was built in 1884. Library Hall was built in 1895 as a memorial to Angelo Carpenter, and is individually listed on the National Register of Historical Places.</p><br>
<p>The earliest homes in the district express some Greek Revival influence. As the population of the valley increased in the 1880s, Italianate homes became a major architectural style. The other important style of homes in the district is Queen Anne. There is one large Georgian Revival residence that was later converted into a bank. Most churches in the district are in the Gothic Revival style. The factories are Queen Anne and Renaissance Revival in design. Most buildings were built with locally fired brick from the Dundee Brick Company, which is notable for its unusual yellow color. The Dundee Township Historic District was added to the National Register of Historical Places on March 7, 1975.</p><br>
<p>Library Hall in Carpentersville, Illinois, also known as Administration Building, Dundee Township Park District, is a Romanesque architecture style building built during 1895-1897. It was built as a memorial to Julius Angelo Carpenter, donor of the Union Congregational Church and Parsonage in Carpenterville. It was individually listed on the National Register of Historical Places in 1973. Also it is included in Dundee Township Historic District.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Library Hall building was dedicated by Mary Carpenter Lord to her late husband and the residents of Carpentersville. Lord&#39;s husband, Angelo Carpenter, founded the settlement in 1851. Carpenter opened a store and built a bridge across the Fox River. Carpenter was instrumental in attracting a foundry for the Illinois Iron & Bolt Company, which provided many jobs for Carpentersville citizens. He was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1870.</p><br>
<p>The design was inspired by a trip that Mary Carpenter Lord took abroad; Lord sought to design a building unlike anything else in the area. The building was dedicated on January 2, 1897. Ownership of the building fell into the hands of the local Congregational Church, who sold it to the Dundee Township Park District for use for the public. It was individually listed on the National Register of Historical Places in 1973, and listed as part of the Dundee Township Historic District two years later. Federal funds secured following the National Register listing allowed the park district to rehabilitate the building.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>Library Hall is considered to be an example of Romanesque architecture, designed by Elgin firm Turnbull & Jones. The exterior walls were constructed with St. Louis pressed brick with Bedford Limestone trimmings. The gutters are made of copper, which have oxidized. The front of the building features beveled glass while the rear has stained glass art windows. Stone steps lead to the entrance. The floors are hard maple, wainscoted with Georgia Pine. The first floor featured two reading rooms, a reference room, and a stock room. The fireplace on the floor includes a decorative tile hearth. Also on the floor was a ladies&#39; parlor, which was used by parishioners when the building was owned by the church. A finished basement, also used by the church, included a lecture room, a steam heater (now replaced by an HVAC unit), a dining room, and a kitchen.</p><br>
<p>The Unterberg is a prominent summit, high, in the Gutenstein Alps in southern Lower Austria. It is located about 10 km south of Hainfeld and is the westernmost and highest summit of a loose chain of mountains that include the Hocheck and the Kieneck.</p><br>
<p>Its crest continues towards the southwest, albeit less high, to the Brunntaler Höhe and the Leitermauern.</p><br>
<p>In a field on the summit there is a chapel with the name of Maria Einsiedl.</p><br>
<p>The mountain is made of limestone rock and has a steep, wooded face to the northwest which is pierced by crags, whilst to the southeast it falls away only half as sharply. About 150 metres in height below the summit is the mountain hut of Unterberghaus. It is a local winter sports centre with several ski pistes and is popular in spring for ski mountaineering. The ski lift runs up the southeastern flank to the top and may be reached from Pernitz in the Piesting valley via Muggendorf.</p><br>
<p>The Myrabach stream rises on the eastern side of the Unterberg from the Myralucke and, after a few kilometres, falls over the picturesque Myra Falls into the valley of the River Piesting.</p><br>
<p>About 8 km south of the Unterberg lies the saddle known as Rohrer Sattel, an important road link from the Piesting valley and Vienna Basin to the Schneeberg region and the Traisen valley.</p><br>
<p>Bowler Rocks is a group of rocks off the north coast of Greenwich Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica lying southwest of Table Island and northwest of Aitcho Islands, and extending 1 km in east-west direction. The area was visited by early 19th-century sealers.</p><br>
<p>The feature is named after David Bowler, surveying recorder aboard the launch Nimrod during the Royal Navy hydrographic survey of the rocks in 1967.</p><br>
<h2>Location</h2><br>
<p>The midpoint is located at which is 1.1 km southwest of Table Island, 2.15 km northwest of Morris Rock, 3.1 km north of Holmes Rock and 5.3 km northeast of Romeo Island (Argentine mapping in 1949, 1953 and 1980, British in 1968 and 1974, Chilean in 1971, and Bulgarian in 2009).</p><br>
<p>The Vassar Swiss Underwear Company Building is an industrial loft building located at 2545 West Diversey Avenue in Chicago, Illinois. It is also known as the Cooper Lamp Building and as of 2010 is slated to house the Green Exchange, a combination business incubator and office space. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008, and as of 2010 is being redeveloped into the Green Exchange, a site for small businesses dedicated to natural products and the environment.</p><br>
<h2>Vassar Swiss Underwear Company</h2><br>
<p>Near the end of the 19th century, the form-fitting union suit was growing in popularity. Starting with $10,000 the trio set up a manufacturing operation in Chicago to produce Rutledges union suits as well as other high-quality mens undergarments.</p><br>
<p>In 1903, with labor troubles looming, Vassar Swiss moved their production 80 mi west to Rochelle, Illinois. The company grew in size, and in 1912, Northwestern Knitting Company (later Munsingwear) purchased the firm. Shortly after the sale, Northwestern decided to ramp up production and move Vassar Swiss back to Chicago. The company contracted real estate developer Stewart Hodges, a specialist in factory construction, to build a new plant, which Vassar Swiss would lease. Hodges chose a site on Diversy, near the rail lines and adjacent to the Maplewood station. Hodges also contracted his father-in-law, Lawrence G. Hallberg, to design the new factory. A building permit was issued in September 1913, and construction was completed in April of the following year.</p><br>
<p>Vassar Swiss prospered in its new location. Rutledge, now a vice-president at parent company Northwestern, joined with other company designers to improve his original union suit design. In 1923, the company constructed an addition on the western portion of their building, again designed by Hallberg, to house their box factory and shipping.</p><br>
<p>Over the next four decades, the company shifted focus and products. Union suits became less popular, and briefs soon became the companys leading product. Vassar Swiss purchased the building from Stewart, after having leased it since construction. In 1967, production operations were moved from Chicago to Paris, Texas, and as of 2010 the Vasarette name is owned by Vanity Fair Brands, and produces womens underwear.</p><br>
<h2>Later Building History</h2><br>
<p>After Vassarette&#39;s departure, the building was purchased by the Frederick Cooper Lamp Company, a manufacturer of high-quality lamps. As of 2010, the redevelopment is unfinished.</p><br>
<h2>Vassar Swiss Underwear Company Building Description</h2><br>
<p>The Vassar Swiss Underwear Company Building is an excellent example of a four-story reinforced concrete industrial loft building, built in two architecturally identical sections that are seamlessly integrated. The original 1913 portion of the building is 160 ft by 300 ft and the 1923 addition is 103 ft by 204 feet; the entire building houses 250,000 square feet. The building is U-shaped in plan, with wings of unequal length backing onto the diagonal railroad track in the rear and flanking a narrow central courtyard.</p><br>
<p>The reinforced concrete construction can be easily seen in the exterior detailing, with obvious horizontal and vertical elements. Although the building is quite long, architectural emphasis on the vertical pilasters, capping them with stylized Arts and Crafts ornamental detail, de-emphasizes the horizontal dimension of the building. The corner bays are further ornamented with taller pilaster capitals projecting through the parapet, and inset stones above the windows.</p><br>
<p>The building is topped with a distinctive four-story tower concealing the roof water tank. The tower is constructed of brick, terra cotta, and concrete, and is topped with a stepped parapet. It originally had a clock on each face.</p><br>
<p>Chaos Reef is the confused area of breakers and shoal water in the north extremity of Aitcho Islands group on the west side of English Strait in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. The area was visited by early 19th century sealers operating from nearby Clothier Harbour.</p><br>
<p>Following a survey by the 1949 Chilean Antarctic Expedition, the feature was resurveyed and descriptively named from HMS Protector in 1967.</p><br>
<h2>Location</h2><br>
<p>The reef is located at 62&deg;21&prime;50.6&Prime;S latitude, 59&deg;46&prime;11&Prime;W longitude which is 970 m north-northwest from the midpoint of Okol Rocks, 1.13 km north-northeast of Kilifarevo Island, 1.48 km east-northeast of Morris Rock, 1.26 km southeast of Turmoil Rock, 3.96 km southwest of Cornwall Island and 2.45 km west-northwest of Fort William, Robert Island (Chilean mapping in 1949-50 and 1971, British in 1968, 1972 and 1990, and Bulgarian in 2009).</p><br>
<p>The Scottish Rite Cathedral is a Masonic building in Omaha in the state of Nebraska in the Midwestern United States. Begun in 1912 and opened in 1914, it remains in use by the Scottish Rite.</p><br>
<p>The building was designed in the Neoclassical Revival by Omaha architect John Latenser, Sr. A native of Liechtenstein, Latenser studied in Stuttgart, Germany before emigrating to the United States in 1879. After working in Indianapolis, Chicago, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he moved to Omaha in 1887. His early work in Nebraska and Iowa consisted largely of designing cottages; but his reputation grew, and he was eventually appointed a Superintendent of Public Buildings during the administration of President William McKinley. His two sons joined his firm, which became John Latenser & Sons. The firm&#39;s work pervaded Omaha: "n the 1930s, 89 of 98 blocks in Downtown Omaha contained at least one building designed by John Latenser and Son".</p><br>
<p>Latenser designed buildings in a variety of revival styles. For the Scottish Rite Temple, he turned to the principles of classical Greek design, using Ionic columns, which are significant in Masonic symbolism. The building is described as "the pinnacle of works in the Neoclassical Revival style".</p><br>
<p>In 2011, the building was listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Cited in its nomination to the Register were both its architectural significance and the prominence of Freemasonry in Omahas business and governmental leadership in course of the buildings history.</p><br>
<p>The John and Emma Lacey Eberts House is a private house located at 109 Vinewood Avenue in Wyandotte, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>John Eberts Jr. was born in 1843 in Detroit. In 1870, he purchased two lots in Wyandotte where this house now stands. In 1872 he married Emma Lacey, and that same year the couple hired Raphael R. Thomas, a cousin of Emma&#39;s, to build this house. The couple moved into the house in late December of the same year. They raised five children in the home (Edith, Elsie, Harry, Frank, and Walter), and John Eberts started a coal business supplying homeowners in the area.</p><br>
<p>In 1892, the house was extensively rebuilt, adding a Queen Anne finish to the exterior. By that time, John Eberts had retired from the coal business and begun other business ventures. In 1895, Harry Eberts re-purchased his father&#39;s coal business, and was soon joined by his brother Frank and then Walter. In 1909, both Walter and Frank were still living in this home with their parents. John and Emma Eberts occupied this house until their respective deaths: John in 1929 and Emma in 1941. After that time, the house passed to their daughters Edith and Elsie, who occupied it until their deaths in 1956 and 1962, respectively.</p><br>
<p>In 1965, the Eberts family sold the house to Ralph Lubaway and his wife Wilma, who raised eleven children in the house. The Lubaway family owned the house until 2005. In 2006, the Blankenship/Granzeier family purchased the house and completely restored it.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The John and Emma Lacey Eberts House is a two-story gable-front Queen Anne structure clad with clapboard and shingling. The front facade has a small turned-post entry porch with a three-section bay window. The upper-story windows are double hung one-over-ones in plain frames. The tall front gable is finished with wood shingles, and contains a paired window with a decorative board frame surround. The side elevation features another small turned post entry porch and a two-story, slant-sided bay window with gabled top, added to the house in approximately 1900-1912. The bay area between the lower and upper windows is shingled. A single-story ell at the rear of the house contains the kitchen.</p><br>
<p>On the interior of the house, the main floor contains an entry foyer, a large living room with a decorative Arts and Crafts fireplace, a large dining room, ahalf-batha and small "alcove," and a large kitchen with separate "kitchen nook" at the rear. On the second floor, there is a large master bedroom with a separate small nursery, and three other mid-sized bedrooms. The attic is open and unfinished. The interior throughout contains the original wood trim, window frames, doors, baseboards and moldings. The pine flooring and wooden staircase is also likely original.</p><br>
<p>The Marx House is a private house at 2630 Biddle Avenue in Wyandotte, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a Michigan State Historic Site</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>This house was built in approximately 1862 for Warren Isham. In 1921, the house was purchased by John Marx, the city attorney and scion of a local brewery owner. In 1974, John Marx&#39;s children Leo Marx and Mary T. Polley gave the house to the city of Wyandotte. The house was opened to the public in 1996.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The Marx House is a two-story Italianate townhouse built of red brick and sitting on a stone foundation. The facade features a double entrance door and tall windows topped with semicircular brick-and-stone hoods. A truncated hipped roof, with ornamental ironwork at the perimeter of the uppermost flat area, caps the structure. A two-story frame wing with a single-story addition id connected at the rear of the building.</p><br>
<p>Potmess Rocks is a group of large rocks lying northwest of Robert Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. The group is extending 1.3 by, featuring the conspicuous rocks named Asses Ears in the north. The area was visited by early 19th century sealers operating from nearby Clothier Harbour.</p><br>
<p>The feature&#39;s name derived from the midday stew served on the launch Nimrod during the Royal Navy hydrographic survey of the rocks in 1967.</p><br>
<h2>Location</h2><br>
<p>The rocks are centred at 62&deg;19&prime;07&Prime;S latitude, 59&deg;45&prime;16&Prime;W longitude which is 3 km west of Heywood Island, 2.9 km northwest of Rogozen Island, 6.06 km north-northwest of Fort William and 3.28 km northeast of Table Island (British mapping in 1822, 1935 and 1968, Argentine in 1948, 1953 and 1980, Chilean in 1948 and 1971, and Bulgarian in 2009).</p><br>
<p>Alison Bay  is a bay in the Qaasuitsup municipality in northwestern Greenland. The bay is a tributary bay of Melville Bay, and is located in the northern part of Upernavik Archipelago, between Kiatassuaq Island in the southwest and the mainland of Greenland in the northeast.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>Alison bay is 20.5 km long. Part of the southern Melville Bay region, the bay is frozen for most of the year. In the northeast, it is bounded by the Wandel Land nunatak, culimnating in an unnamed 931 m peak. Iterlassuaq, a small indentiation of the bay separates Wandel Land in the north from Qaqqasungnarsuaq − another, smaller nunatak, culminating in an unnamed 510 m peak.</p><br>
<p>A small unnamed glacier tongue of Greenland ice sheet drains the latter into the innermost part of the bay, east of the opening of the Ikerasaa Strait. The strait flows west-south-westward between Kiatassuaq Island in the north, and Sanningassorsuaq Peninsula in the south. The entrance to the strait is split into two channels, with a small Milissua Island straddling the middle.</p><br>
<p>The Hohe Wand is a mountain ridge in Lower Austria and is part of the Gutenstein Alps. It lies west of Steinfeld in the Vienna Basin; its highest peak  attains a height of 1,132 m. It is one of Vienna&#39;s Hausberge.</p><br>
<h2>General</h2><br>
<p>It derives its name, which means "High Wall", from the steep rock faces on its south and southeast side. The high plateau is about 8 km long and stretches from the area of the Plackles peak in the southwest to the so-called Wandeck in the northeast.</p><br>
<p>The plateau of the Hohe Wand may be accessed over a toll road built in 1931/32 that branches off the road between Stollhof and Maiersdorf. From 1965 until it was dismantled in 1994 there was also a double chairlift from Grünbach to the Plackles summit.</p><br>
<p>Easy, but little used, hiking trails runs from the Dürnbach valley, from Grünbach and from the "rear side", from Miesenbach, up the mountain. Most of the climbs on the southern and southeastern sides are more challenging, requiring sure-footedness and, in places a head for heights. In this area are most of the over 700 climbing routes of all levels of difficulty; there are also numerous Klettersteigs.</p><br>
<p>There are no less than 225 caves in the area of the Hohe Wand. The Unicorn Cave near Dreistetten is accessible to the public as a show cave.</p><br>
<p>Due to its location on the edge of the Vienna Basin and its accessibility by car, there are 3 popular take-off points on the Hohe Wand for paragliders and hang gliders. The most popular of these is the eastern one, the Oststartplatz, the most challenging and the one most used by hang gliders is the southern one, the Südstartplatz; there is also the less used Almfrieden Startplatz. The Hohe Wand is especially suitable for flying due to its south-to-east wind situations and is also the local mountain for the Viennese.</p><br>
<p>On the plateau there is a large number of mountain inns and Alpine huts, but also numerous weekend houses, especially in Wanddörfl.</p><br>
<p>Part of the Hohe Wand has been placed under protection as the Hohe Wand Nature Park, but the name is used to market tourist attractions, some of which have been heavily criticised as being incompatible with a nature park (e.g. the "Skywalk" observation platform that juts out from the rocks).</p><br>

<p>The Van Tassell and Kearney Horse Auction Mart is located in New York, New York. The building was constructed in 1903-04 to the designs of Jardine, Kent & Jardine in the Beaux-Arts Style. It originally served as a horse auction mart that catered to New York’s elite families, including the Vanderbilts and Delanos. According to the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission designation report, each Tuesday and Friday, Van Tassell & Kearney held auctions in the building. Though carriages remained an important part of the business, most advertisements and newspaper stories about the mart concerned the sale of horses, particularly high-priced ribbon winners, polo ponies, hunters, and thoroughbreds. Other sales were devoted to breeding stock and coach horses, including a large group of horses co-owned by Alfred W. Vanderbilt and Robert L. Gerry in 1906.</p><br>
<p>As automobiles and other forms of public transit became much more common after World War I, the practical need for horses and stables decreased. The auction mart ceased functioning in the 13th Street building. It served as an assembly-line training center for women during World War II. From 1978 to 2005, artist Frank Stella owned the building and used it as his studio. His nearly 30-year stewardship of the building resulted in the facade being cleaned and restored.</p><br>
<p>In 2006, after discovering plans of a new owner to demolish the building and replace it with a condo development, the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation (GVSHP) asked the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission to hold an emergency hearing on the structure. There was significant support for designation, including City Councilmember Rosie Mendez. Playing on the history of the building as an assembly line training center for women during World War II, GVSHP used the iconic "We Can Do It!" image (often associated with Rosie the Riveter) on stickers, flyers, and T-shirts emblazoned with the slogan "We Can Save It! Landmark 128 East 13th Street" as part of the campaign to secure landmark designation for the building.</p><br>
<p>In January 2010 after an extensive renovation, Peridance Capezio Center opened here at its new location.</p><br>
<p>The Odd Fellows Hall at 165-171 Grand Street between Centre and Baxter Streets, in the Little Italy neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, was built in 1847-48 and designed by the firm of Trench & Snook in the Italianate style, one of the citys earliest structures in this style, which Joseph Trench had brought to New York with his design for the A. T. Stewart store at 280 Broadway in 1845. His partner, John B. Snook, was responsible for many cast-iron buildings in the nearby SoHo neighborhood. The mansard roof was an addition, designed by John Buckingham and built in 1881-82. The Independent Order of Odd Fellows used the building until the 1880s, when they moved uptown with the citys population. The building was afterwards converted for commercial and industrial use, and is now residential condominiums.</p><br>
<p>The building was designated a New York City landmark in 1982, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.</p><br>
<p>The Embassy of the United States of America in Kabul is the diplomatic mission of the United States of America in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. The embassy complex is located on Great Massoud Road in the Wazir Akbar Khan section of the Afghan capital, Kabul, and is home to the USA Ambassador to Afghanistan. The Embassies of Finland and South Korea are located behind this complex and the headquarters of the International Security Assistance Force  is located across the street.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The USA Embassy in Kabul was elevated in May 1948 from the USA Kabul Legation. Louis Goethe Dreyfus, who previously served as Minister Plenipotentiary from 1940 to 1942, became the USA Ambassador to Afghanistan from 1949 to 1951. It was closed in 1989, before the start of the long civil war followed by the Taliban takeover. The embassy re-opened after the US-led Operation Enduring Freedom in late 2001 and was under construction until early 2006, when USA President George W. Bush along with Afghan President Hamid Karzai held an inauguration ceremony. The USA State Department is spending another $500 million to further expand its premises, which was scheduled to be completed in 2014. However, the USA State Department extended the completion date to July 2016.</p><br>
<h3>September 2011 attack</h3><br>
<p>Heavily armed Taliban insurgents wearing suicide vests struck various buildings in Kabul on 13 September 2011, and at least 7 people were killed and 19 wounded. The USA embassy was among the buildings targeted and several Afghan visa applicants who were waiting at the embassy were wounded. No embassy personnel were hurt in the incident. The United States blamed the Pakistani Army and its Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) spy network for the attack. Another deadly attack at an annex to the embassy occurred later the same month.</p><br>
<h3>April 2012 attack</h3><br>
<p>As part of a nationwide series of coordinated attacks, Taliban elements attacked the embassy on April 15, 2012. The attack was defeated by Afghan security forces. Gen John Allen, commander of the International Security Assistance Force, stated he was "enormously proud" of the response mounted by Afghan security forces. He added: "No one is underestimating the seriousness of the attacks, and well work hard to determine the circumstances that led to todays events."</p><br>
<h3>Other events</h3><br>
<p>On November 30, 2015 the embassy issued a public warning of an imminent terrorist attack in Kabul. The warning was based on credible intelligence saying the attacks would take place in two days. The embassy spokeswoman told reporters that the American citizens, interests, or the embassy were not specifically threatened.</p><br>
<p>Lientur Rocks is a group of prominent adjacent rocks lying off the north coast of Robert Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica and extending 660 m in east-west direction and 320 m in north-south direction. The area was visited by early 19th-century sealers operating from nearby Clothier Harbour.</p><br>
<p>The feature was named by the 1949-50 Chilean Antarctic Expedition after the expedition patrol ship Lientur.</p><br>

<p>The rocks are centred at 62&deg;19&prime;36&Prime;S latitude, 59&deg;31&prime;55&Prime;W longitude which is 1.26 km north-northwest of Newell Point, 710 m north-northeast of Tatul Island, 3.12 km southeast of Henfield Rock, 3.41 km southwest of Mellona Rocks and 3.74 km west-southwest of Liberty Rocks (British mapping in 1968, Chilean in 1971, Argentine in 1980, and Bulgarian in 2009).</p><br>
<p>Mellona Rocks is a group of scattered rocks lying at the north entrance to Nelson Strait in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica and extending 1.7 by. The area was known to the early 19th-century sealers and sometimes included under the names Heywood Islands or Powels Islands.</p><br>
<p>The feature is named after the British sealing ship Mellona under Captain Thomas Johnson that operated in the South Shetlands in 1821–22.</p><br>

<p>The feature is named after the British sealing vessel Liberty under Captain Peacock that visited the South Shetlands in 1821–22.</p><br>

<p>The Sundance School, also known as Old Stoney, was built in 1923 in Sundance, Wyoming to serve both the elementary and the high school students of Crook County School District #1. The two story sandstone building is one of the largest buildings in Sundance. It served the community as a school until 1971.</p><br>
<p>The school measures about 57 ft by 89 ft on a raised basement story, with two principal stories and an attic under a steep cross-gabled roof. It had its own electrical generating plant in the basement, fueled by coal. The basement also featured the toilet rooms and play rooms. The first floor had four classrooms, a laboratory, a domestic science room, two commercial rooms and an assembly room. The stone is buff-colored Minnelusa sandstone from a quarry 4 mi distant. Construction was by the Marshall Engineer Company of Deadwood, South Dakota; the architects were Link & Haire of Billings, Montana.</p><br>
<p>The Sundance School was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.</p><br>
<p>Winter Island is an island 900 m long, lying 200 m north of Skua Island in the Argentine Islands, Wilhelm Archipelago, off the west coast of Graham Land, Antarctica.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Winter Island was named by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE), 1934–37, which made this island the site of its winter base during 1935.</p><br>
<p>The Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey established a base on Winter Island in 1947, Base F (Argentine Islands). The main hut, built on the site of the old BGLE hut, was named "Wordie House" after Sir James Wordie, a member of Shackleton&#39;s Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition who visited during its construction.</p><br>
<p>Wordie House "was constructed using building materials from the hut at Port Lockroy and material salvaged from the whaling station at Deception Island,” according to the United Kingdom Antarctic Heritage Trust. In May 1954, “the operation of the station and science program moved to a new building on the neighboring Galindez Island. The station was renamed Faraday and it continued the longstanding meteorological program that began at Wordie House. Faraday was renamed Vernadsky in 1996 when the UK transferred it to Ukraine.”</p><br>
<p>In 1960, Wordie House was briefly reoccupied when a party failed to reach Base T at Adelaide Island and were forced to overwinter in the hut.</p><br>
<p>“The hut consists of the kitchen and living room, generator shed, office, dog room, and toilet,” according to the trust. “A number of original artefacts are still found on site. … A timber flagpole and a rare timber British Crown Land sign are also found outside.”</p><br>
<p>Normal occupancy of Wordie House in its early years was four to five people. Cans of coffee and other goods, records, tools, paint cans, plates, pots, pans, books, typewriters, radio equipment, and other items still remain in the hut, making it a fascinating time capsule of life in one of the first scientific stations established in Antarctica.</p><br>
<h3>Historic site</h3><br>
<p>Wordie House is of historic importance as an example of an early British scientific base. It has been restored and designated a Historic Site or Monument (HSM 62), following a proposal by the United Kingdom to the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting.</p><br>

<p>The Seppman Mill  is a former windmill in Blue Earth County, Minnesota, United States, now preserved in Minneopa State Park. It was built by Louis Seppmann, a German immigrant, between 1862 and 1864 and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. The sails and internal machinery have been removed.</p><br>
<h2>Construction</h2><br>
<p>Seppmann was born in Westphalia, Germany in 1835 and emigrated to the United States at age 17. He settled in Blue Earth County, Minnesota, five years later, in 1857. He made his living as a stonemason. In 1862 he used his earnings to begin constructing a wind-powered gristmill on his own land. Seppmann was only somewhat familiar with windmills from his homeland, but drew on his "considerable natural talent for mechanics and invention."</p><br>
<p>Seppmann, with help from some fellow masons, built the first 10 ft of the walls before being interrupted by financial difficulties and the outbreak of the Dakota War of 1862. He resumed work the next summer, joined now by neighbor Herman Hegley. Using a ramp and a wheelbarrow to convey material up the growing structure, they finished construction in 1864. Seppmann carved most of the wooden machinery himself with an axe, except for two metal cog wheels and the millstones, which had to be purchased from St. Louis for $600.</p><br>
<h2>Physical description</h2><br>
<p>The stone walls are 32 ft high and conical. At the base the diameter is 30 ft and the walls are 2 ft thick, but taper to 20 ft across and 6 in thick at the top. The mill is capped with a wooden dome that could be pivoted on a track to catch the prevailing winds. There was a small platform on the outside of the dome where the miller liked to sit and smoke his pipe. The wooden arms, covered with sailcloth, spanned 72 ft. The mill had five floors, though some were very short and only held machinery.</p><br>
<h2>Starting the mill</h2><br>
<p>Seppmann was not a farmer, so to test the finished mill he had to borrow money and buy grain. As the American Civil War was still raging, grain was quite expensive and the bank charged him 25% interest in advance for his loan. Seppmann also needed to hire an expert to start up the mill and show him how to operate it. However, there was no wind for four or five weeks and the expert eventually gave up and went home. The first light wind didn&#39;t blow until a Sunday, but Seppmann was opposed to working on the Sabbath until his partner Hegley convinced him that if God had provided the first wind in over a month on a Sunday it must be okay.</p><br>
<p>However without the experts help, Seppmann and Hegley immediately clogged the millstone. Thinking more speed would help, they put on full sail. Instead the rising wind set the arms spinning so fast the operators couldnt stop it. The wooden parts grew so hot that the windmill was in danger of catching fire. Meanwhile, a crowd of onlookers had gathered outside, eager to see Seppmanns curiosity finally in operation and surprised that it seemed to be running so fast it might tear itself apart. In desperation Seppmann tossed something into the gears, but it shattered and a piece was flung away with such force that it shot a hole through the rim of Seppmanns hat. At last Seppmann and Hegley were able to unfurl some of the sails and halt the mill. Ultimately they learned that the clog was due to poor dressing of the millstones and after making improvements, including a better brake, were operational by late September.</p><br>
<h2>Operation</h2><br>
<p>In a good wind the mill could grind 150 bushels of wheat in a day, producing fairly good quality flour. Farmers came from as far 30 mi away to have their grain milled. In 1866 Seppmann married and bought out his partner Hegley, giving shares instead to his new in-laws. The Seppmanns initially lived in a small stone house next to the windmill, which was converted to a warehouse in the 1870s after they moved to a new home.</p><br>
<p>Lightning struck the mill in June 1873 and blasted off two of the arms. Seppmann replaced them, but seven years later a tornado knocked off two arms again. By then technological advances and competition from other mills made it unprofitable to repair. Seppmann continued to operate the mill with the two surviving arms, making animal feed. Finally a storm in 1890 damaged the remaining arms and Seppmann ceased operations.</p><br>
<h2>Later history</h2><br>
<p>Over the next 40 years the mill deteriorated and the warehouse was torn down entirely.</p><br>
<p>The mill site was originally separated from the state park by over a mile and public access was difficult. The Minnesota State Highway Department built a parking area off Highway 68 in the mid-1950s. In the late 1960s Seppmann heirs and other landowners sold the intervening land to the state so the park could be expanded into one contiguous property. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources spent $65,000 carrying out repairs to the mill and reconstructing the warehouse. The mill&#39;s exterior was repaired, interior structures refurbished, doors and windows replaced, and the roof reshingled.</p><br>
<p>The internal mechanisms have been dismantled, and neither the mill nor the warehouse interiors are open to the public. Park managers hope someday to restore the machinery and the arms.</p><br>
<p>The Marsh Foundation School is an alternative school in Van Wert, Ohio, United States. Housed in a complex of historic buildings along the former Lincoln Highway,</p><br>
<p>Born in 1833, George H. Marsh settled in Van Wert at the age of twelve with his father. Growing to adulthood, he erected the present farmhouse in the first half of the 1860s; a two-story brick structure, it is a built in the plan of a cross. As the years passed, Marsh became very wealthy, and he became determined to use his wealth to help others. According to locals, Marsh and his family were returning home from Fort Wayne, Indiana on a winter night and saw two impoverished children, and consequently his wife Hilinda suggested dedicating their estate to children such as those two.</p><br>
<p>After Marsh&#39;s death, his will provided more than $5,000,000 for the establishment of a foundation to administer the school. In 1923, the trustees contracted with Langdon, Hohly, and Gram, a Toledo architectural company, to build six school buildings on the Marsh farm. Since that time, the school and home have served the community of Van Wert, while the original house has been converted into a museum.</p><br>
<p>In 1980, the Marsh homestead and school buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places; twenty-one buildings across the complex qualified as contributing properties. The property qualified for inclusion on the Register both because of its distinctive architecture and because of its connection to Marsh: he was one of Van Wert&#39;s leading citizens, and the school buildings are among the best Jacobethan structures in western Ohio.</p><br>
<p>The Alna School is located on Alna Road in the town of Alna, Maine. Built in 1795, it is one of the oldest surviving school buildings in the state. It has also housed Alna&#39;s town offices. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 28, 1975.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Alna School is located in central Alna, a rural community in Lincoln County, Maine. It is set on the west side of Alna Road (Maine State Route 218), north of its junction with Golden Ridge Road and south of the historic Alna Meetinghouse. The school is a single story wood frame structure, with a low-pitch hipped roof topped by an open octagonal cupola with bell. Its exterior is finished in wooden clapboards, and it rests on a brick foundation. There are two windows on each side, with the main entrance set near one corner. A small single story addition, of 20th-century origin, has been added.</p><br>
<p>The school was built in 1795, by either Moses Carlton or Samuel Averill, each of whom was contracted by the newly incorporated town to build a school; it is not known which of the two built this school. The cupola was added in the early 19th century. The building served the town as a school well into the 20th century, and served for a time as its town offices. It is the second-oldest school in Maine; only the Old Schoolhouse in York is older (1755).</p><br>
<p>The Van Wert County Courthouse is a historic governmental building in downtown Van Wert, Ohio, United States. Located at 121 E. Main Street, the courthouse is a Second Empire structure built in 1876. It is Van Wert County&#39;s third courthouse: when the county was established, the village of Willshire was designated the county seat; Van Wert was made the seat in 1838, and a courthouse-and-jail complex was built in that community in the following year.</p><br>
<p>Designed by T.J. Tolan, Tolan employed multiple groundbreaking construction techniques throughout the structure, such as pressed steel; his success in using these innovations earned recognition for both him and the courthouse in a national trade journal. Rising above the front of the courthouse is a clock tower with a statue of Justice placed in a niche. Made of zinc, the statue is 8 ft tall; before its installation at the courthouse, it was awarded first place in a Philadelphia sculpture competition.</p><br>
<p>Today, county officials continue to use the courthouse for everyday operations. Among the offices in the courthouse are those of the county treasurer, the county recorder, the county auditor, and the Van Wert County Common Pleas Court. Some other county agencies maintain offices in other locations, such as the county sheriff and the county commissioners.</p><br>
<p>In 1974, the Van Wert County Courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, becoming the first building in the county to receive this distinction. It qualified for inclusion because of its well-preserved historic architecture, which was seen as significant statewide.</p><br>
<p>Obudu Plateau is a plateau found on the Oshie Ridge of the Sankwala Mountain range, in Cross River State, in the southeast of Nigeria. The plateau is found in Obanliku local government area of the Cross river state. The plateau extends towards Nigeria&#39;s south eastern border.</p><br>
<p>The Sankwala mountain ranges were first explored in 1949 by McCaughley, a Scottish rancher who camped out in the mountains for a month, before returning with Hugh Jones – a fellow rancher who, in 1951, together with Crawfeild developed a cattle ranch on the plateau known as the Obudu Cattle Ranch. Although the ranch has been through troubles since, it has very recently been rehabilitated to its former glory by the Protea South African Hotel chain.</p><br>
<p>The Obudu Plateau is spread over an area of over 40 square miles and rises to about 5200 ft (1,584 metres) above sea level. The plateau is a giant massif in its own right and its peak reaches a height of about 1,716 m above sea level. The plateau is known to be a habitat of rare species of birds.</p><br>

<p>Obudu Plateau is found on the Oshie Ridge, one of the two ridges that make up the Sankwala Mountains in Cross River state of Nigeria (the other being the Sankwala ridge itself from which the mountain range takes its name).</p><br>
<h2>Climate</h2><br>
<p>The climate on the Obudu Plateau is comparatively cold.The plateau experiences a semi-temperate climate, with temperatures going between 26 &deg;C to 32 &deg;C during the dry season of November to January.</p><br>
<p>The rainy season in June to September is colder with temperature lows of between 4 &deg;C to 10 &deg;C recorded.</p><br>
<p>The plateau receives heavy and abundant rainfall during the rainy season. A total of 4,200 millimeters of rainfall is received on the plateau between April to November. Orographic activity is a factor contributing to the heavy rainfall. Clouds coming into southern Nigeria from the Atlantic Ocean drop their moisture content onto the plateau as the barrier of the Sankwala mountains forces the cloud upward and the resulting rapid cooling is followed by heavy rainfall on the plateau.</p><br>

<h2>Attractions</h2><br>
<p>The Plateau is home to a cattle ranch popularly known as the Obudu Cattle Ranch. The ranch is approximately 65 km from Obudu town, in the northeastern part of Cross River State.</p><br>
<p>The plateau has a tourist lodge, built at an altitude of about 1600 metres above sea level.</p><br>
<p>A cable car transport network takes visitors from the foot of the mountain to the top of the plateau.</p><br>
<p>An airstrip is located at the foot of the plateau for visitors reaching the plateau by air from other parts of the world.</p><br>
<p>The Thomaston Opera House is a historic performance venue and the town hall of Thomaston, Connecticut. Located at 153 Main Street, it was built in 1883-85, and is a good local example of Romanesque architecture. The theater in the building has served as a performance and film venue since its construction. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. The opera house&#39;s principal tenant is now the Landmark Community Theatre.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Thomaston Opera House is prominently sited in Thomaston&#39;s downtown, at the southwest corner of Main and Clay Streets. It is a large three-story brick building with Romanesque features and a hip roof. Its dominant feature is a multi-stage square tower, rising through five levels to a clock stage, open belfry with triple-arched openings, and crowning pyramidal roof and weathervane. The roof cornice is adorned with dentil moulding and modillion blocks. The third-floor windows are set in round-arch openings with contrasting brick and stone arches.</p><br>
<p>The building was designed by Robert Hill of Waterbury and built in 1883-85 on land donated by Aaron Thomas, the son of the town&#39;s namesake, Seth Thomas. It was used as a venue for theatrical performances and social events until the 1930s, when it was converted for a time into a movie house. It was closed down due to safety code violations in the 1960s, and underwent restoration, reopening with town offices on the first floor and the theater continuing on the upper floor. It is now used for live theatrical productions and other events.</p><br>
